The Day Of A Catholic Church Service - 1245 Words

Last Sunday, while attending my weekly Catholic Church service, I strived to analyze the ritualized service. I realized that a service itself is not just comprised of one ritual, but of multiple rituals that are guided by the purpose of ultimately salvaging one’s soul at any given moment by offering one’s time to God. Thus, I sought out to better understand one of the rituals present individually, which is the most important one (though they are all important) present in the service. Such ritual is the blessing of the bread and wine, and the reception of such blessed elements by the people in attendance. I chose to analyze this ritual, referred to as the miracle of Transubstantiation, for it indeed fulfills the goal of the Eucharist as a whole: providing salvation to the souls of the audience, which accentuates the importance of the ritual itself. Moreover, I chose this ritual because it carries a huge misconception, which is that the blessed bread and wine are symbolic of Jesus’s Flesh and Blood. As I learned in a Religion and Ethics class, Catholics believe that, while the priest blesses the elements of the ritual, the Holy Spirit descends upon the bread and wine, converting both the bread and wine to the actual Body and Blood of Jesus, which propels the bread and wine to lose their symbolic meanings. The theme of sight vs. blindness is a very prevalent theme in Oedipus the King. The two most affected characters by this main theme are Oedipus, the king, and Tiresias, the blind seer. On the other hand, options that reduce both values are clearly to be avoided or reversed immediately. For example, McDonalds rapid withdrawal of its recent fifty-five cent hamburger campaign, which alienated franchisees without creating much new customer loyalty or demand, was a costly but necessary decision to avoid further damage to shareholder value. Enhancing stakeholder benefits is important for long-term shareholder wealth. Providing additional, non-shareholder, stakeholder benefits, when they are relatively low, significantly enhances total shareholder wealth. In contrast, once stakeholder benefits are relatively high, further increases no longer increase long-term shareholder wealth. However, because stakeholder theory lacks direction on how management is to make trade-offs among competing stakeholders, it can be thought as incomplete as a management strategy. Value-based management, in contrast, provides the manager a solution to these competing interests since it requires only a single-valued objective function. On the other hand, VBM, is really no more than a means to keep score since it does not provide guidance on how to achieve the goal of value creation. Managers, often face choices that involve real tradeoffs between stakeholder and shareholder value. These choices need to be made on the basis of their expected impact on shareholder value alone. If a proposal to increase customers or customer value will reduce shareholder value, then it should be rejected. For instance, we commonly find that clients offer product features or delivery options that customers appreciate but for which they will not, in fact, pay. Nevertheless, the shareholder is the central stakeholder. Placing the shareholder at the focal point of business activity is simply recognizing the fact that firms that do not satisfy shareholder requirements increase their risk of capital flight, higher interest rates, pressure from the board of directors, takeovers, and lower productivity. Organizations that create long-term shareholder value simultaneously create relatively greater value for all stakeholders. Thus, value-creating organizations appear to operate with the following objective function in mind: Maximize shareholder wealth subject to satisfying remaining stakeholder requirements.  I believe that a companys success ultimately depends on its ability to build and nurture relationships with constituents that are essential to their business: consumers, customers, suppliers, partners, government authorities, communities, employees and share owners. Mary finished writing the book in 1817 when she was just 19 years of age, but the book was not published till the start of 1818. Mary conceived the idea of Frankenstein in 1816 the year without a summer. In that year Mary and her lover at the time, Percy Shelley took a trip to Lake Geneva to see Lord Bryon but all outdoor events they planned were cancelled due to the weather. This meant their whole summer was spent indoors talking only ever about science and the supernatural. After reading a supernatural story they came up with the idea that they each write a supernatural story and the best story would win. Mary thought of an idea which produced Frankenstein. Marys inspiration to write Frankenstein came from a number of things, for example: James Lind, the mentor of Percy Shelley while he was at Eton. He was well known because of his interest in animal electricity. At Eton he was probably one of the first people in England to demonstrate Electro-medical experiments in which he made dead frogs jump like living ones. The Genre of Frankenstein is a Gothic genre. Gothic genre usually tells a story of horror and romance. As in the case of Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein creates the monster which establishes the horror, the other side of the story is the romance with Victor and Elizabeth. In the end these two differences meet where the monster kills Elizabeth, the combination of these two ideas produces a gothic but wonderful storyline. 1st Para The basic plot of Chapter 23 is that the monster is on the loose and kills Elizabeth. A search takes place with no success. : Mary Shelley has used this chapter to express the feelings of the characters, mainly Victor. At the start it explains the thoughts of Victor and the monster through Pathetic Fallacy, using the weather to describe how the tension is building up and that it would be released soon. Further on it describes Victors thoughts and feeling after he hears, and then finds, that the monster has killed Elizabeth. Mary Shelley moves the reader to feel empathy with the narrator in the scene where Victor expresses his love for his dead wife. To him she almost appears to be sleeping: as she lay, her head upon her arm and a handkerchief thrown across her face and neck, I might have supposed her asleep. This contrasts sharply with the horror of what has happened, and the reader is reminded of this in the same paragraph: The murderous mark of the fiends grasp was on her neck. Mary Shelley then introduces another emotion, that of anger. In his anger Victor goes on the search for the monster, he then starts questioning himself about why did he make the creature and could he live with this. After the unsuccessful hunt he goes back to the room where Elizabeth is dead and lays with her. He is still questioning himself and feeling immense amount of guilt for what he has done. However at the end of the chapter he thinks to himself: Why should I be like this? Why should I feel all this guilt? After all my life has been a tale of horrors. In this chapter Mary Shelley uses Victor as a tool to express a rollercoaster of emotions, thoughts and feelings. 2nd Para The 1st and 2nd paragraphs of Chapter 23 show greatly, the atmosphere surrounding the story. The chapter begins with calmness: transitory light lovely scene of waters, woods and swiftly changes building into a horrific storm. The Wind now rose with great violence. Here Mary Shelley has used personification to show Frankensteins mood which rapidly increases in violence just like the winds ferocity. This creates a certain foreboding atmosphere to the story. It links how stormy the weather is to the moods of the characters. Most of the sentences and phrases used in this paragraph use pathetic fallacy, which is the attribution of human emotions or characteristics to imitate objects or to nature. In addition where it says the cloud swept across it swifter than a flight of the vulture, it is showing a symbol of death, reflecting back onto the story about the deaths that have occurred and the death that happens in this chapter. Mary Shelley has the ability to manipulate the reader into a far deeper way of thought. Suddenly a heavy storm of rain descended also builds up the atmosphere and suspense, not only because of the words she has put into the sentence such as Suddenly but because of the way the sentence links to what the characters mood is like e. g. descended. This is an indication of how Victors mood is changing from being happy in paragraph 1 to anxiety and fearfulness, which will dominate most of this chapter. The storm reminds us of the night that Victors monster was created and the other stormy night that the monster went on his rampage of killing people. Finally the restless waves just adds that little bit of extra suspense. It practically tells the reader what is about to happen. Restless waves that were beginning to rise is telling that the characters moods, especially Victors, were going to rise in a way of aggression. This is because of the fear for his life because of the monster he has created. Not only does Mary Shelley build up fear and tension through comparisons but also through the vocabulary she uses. 3rd Para Throughout the 3rd paragraph in chapter 23 Mary uses words such as obscured, terrified and conflict to put fear and terror into the readers mind. She draws on peoples fear of the dark and how the imagination plays tricks on the mind when shapes cant be seen properly, but so soon as night obscured the shapes of objects, a thousand fears arose in my mind. This also reflects Victors feelings and how his fear is building too. Another way Mary Shelley puts terror into the readers mind is by using repetition. But this night is dreadful, very dreadful the way Mary Shelley writes this emphasizes whats going on, it makes you feel whatever is happening is twice as bad. Phrases such as fearful silence hold the reader in suspense as to what is going to happen next. The effect of this is to personify the silence. Elizabeths fear is shown in the 4th paragraph where she is worried about Victors agitation. She is described as trembling from the way Victor glances at her which communicated terror to her. The reader is left now feeling tense because the characters are agitated.

Decisions made may not be appropriate. Occasionally, they might even be unrealistic or irrational. Thus, conflicts tend to impair one’s efficiency. Sometimes, conflict is also observed to give rise to certain maladjusted behaviours in individuals trying to cope with it. Here are a few things your tween should do before the final day of middle school approaches. It will be here before you know it.   Attend a Middle School Dance   If your child has avoided dances or other social gatherings while in middle school now is the chance to attend one before the year is out. Encourage your tween to go to a school dance, carnival, concert, or other school function before middle school ends. If he or she is shy about going alone, have him or her gather a group of friends to attend together. Take pictures and give them suggestions on making it through the event if they feel awkward or out of place.   Take Pictures Your tween thinks that he or she will remember everything from middle school forever, but that isnt the case. Encourage your tween to take photos of the school, friends, and even teachers. Also, have him or her go through their locker and school binders for notes, handouts or other items that would be fun to keep for later. If your tween is creative, he or she can combine photos and other items into a fun scrapbook to enjoy for years to come. Also, if your family budget allows, be sure to purchase a yearbook so that your child can have friends sign it and keep as a forever reminder. Thank Those Middle School Teachers   Chances are your child had a few teachers during the middle school years that he or she really liked and who had a positive impact on your tween. Nows the time to thank them for all they did. Your tween can write personal thank you notes for his or her special teachers, or just leave a simple Thank You on the teachers white board as a surprise. If your child wants to do something special, he or she could bake brownies or find a special teacher gift for favorite middle school teachers.   Make a List of Top Middle School Events When your tween is older he or she will have fun looking back on the middle school experience. Encourage your child to make lists of middle school events, friends, etc. He or she could even get friends involved by asking them for their list of favorite middle school experiences. Tuck the lists away in his or her yearbook so he or she can enjoy reading them later.   Visit Your New High School   If middle school is coming to an end, that means that high school is just around the corner. See if your tween can visit the new school or attend a school orientation. Seeing a new campus will help your tween get excited about entering high school and it might even give him or her ideas on activities to join or try. Also, encourage your tween to visit the high school website to learn more about classes, clubs and other school events. Plan an End of Middle School Party   If youre up for it, allow your tween to have a gathering of middle school friends to bid farewell to middle school and hello to high school. You could invite a few close friends, or make it a large gathering, depending on your situation. Food, music and a slideshow of pictures from middle school will allow the children to appreciate their middle school days and get ready for high school.

1. Definition of Polygamy Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is polygyny where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry is completely prohibited. Now coming to the original question, why is a man allowed to have more than one wife? 2. The Qur'an is the only religious scripture in the world that says,"marry only one". The Qur'an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase `marry only one'. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one. Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives. In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished, since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one. Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife. 3. Hindus are more polygynous than Muslims The report of the `Committee of The Status of Woman in Islam', published in 1975 mentions on page numbers 66 and 67 that the percentage of polygamous marriages between the years 1951 and 1961 was 5.06% among the Hindus and only 4.31% among the Muslims. According to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. It is illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife.

Public Administration and Theories Essay

In the United States of America President Woodrow Wilson is considered to be the father of public administration. He was the first president to hire social scientists in government and as a result as other presidents came along such as Freanklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson public administration evolved to what it is today (Henry, 2013, p. 342). President Lyndon Johnson is the one that implemented the idea of policy analysis in the federal government in the 1950’s at the same time that this idea of public administration/policy analsysis was evolving in the government it was also emerging in academia. There was various theories and models emerging as public administration evolved throughout history. Two models that came to be is the organized anarchy and elite/mass model. The organized anarchy model according to Nicholas Henry (2013) is, â€Å"The Basics to the model is the presence of three streams, problems, politics, and policies† ( p.345). The problems stream is where the public and policymakers focusing on a particular problem, defining the problem, and figuring out whether the problem can be solved by implementing new policy or just letting the problem go away. The second stream is politics where it involves the government agenda where issues are listed and discussed by various individuals in government such as elected appointees, members of Congress and interest paties. The last stream in this model is policies where there’s a list of policies that may resolve whatever the issue is. The organized anarchy model is also known as the â€Å"garbage can† model. According to William Newman (2013), â€Å"The Garbage Can model of decision is used to illustrate how the foreign policy process is an organized anarchy; decision making is the intersection of four streams–choice opportunities, problems, solutions, and participants. The model helps identify both institutional and persuasion-bargaining variables and highlights their interactions as streams  are connected to produce policy†. The main weakness of this policy is there is a lot of ambiguity where there’s not set goals defined and at times because of the ambiguity not all issues are resolved and/or discussed. Another model that came out of the evolution of public administration is the elite/mass model. In the elite/mass model policy is developed and implemented by the elitethen flows downward to the masses (Henry, 2013, p. 343). Society is split into two sectors where those who have power are considered to be the elite and those that have no power are the masses. The public policies that are implemented consists of values of the elite, which as a result the elite shape how those of the masses think. Public officials and administrators implement all the policies that has been decided by the elite and people of the masses have no choice but to accept these policies which in turn shape what their values are to be. The weakness of this model is that policies are implemented based off of a small gropu of people (elites) that is not representative of the masses as a whole. This model creates a separation of two sectors where the only individuals that are valued are those that have money, they are the ones that are in control and have power to shape the environment that everyone lives in that includes the masses who’s voices are never heard or taken into consideration. According to Ali Farazmand (1999), â€Å" The linking elites and the operational elites within organizations have a primary task of assuring stability, compliance with organizational rules, and cohesion and control among members of their organizations. They are the agents of the strategic elites located at the apex of modern organizations in government, corporations, nonprofit institutions, and political parties†. This idea that there’s various levels of elites within the group as a whole and as result of these vaious levels of elite there’s cohesion because they control the masses. References Henry, N.
