Nightmarket
Nightmarket On Friday, my friend Weywey 06 (Course 2: Mechanical Engineering) and I went to Harvard Square for some errands and dinner. Weywey dug through this entire bin of orange, red, and green markers until she found the one blue Sharpie in the entire thing. These folders were on sale for 18 cents each! Needless to say, I was thrilled. (I bought 12.) Unfortunately, one was a casualty of some rainy weather today. Anyway, back to Harvard Square. Weywey and I ate at Penang, on the second floor of the Staples building. You cant see it from this picture, but theres a great view out over the shops. After dinner, we visited the Harvard Book Store I bought the book Wigfield, written by Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert (its French, bitch). Then we took the #1 bus back to MIT for Nightmarket. This event is co-sponsored by lots of cultural groups across campus, including AAA (Asian American Association), CSC (Chinese Students Club), and ATS (Association of Taiwanese Students). There were tons of activities at this event, and unfortunately I got photos of very few. They had raffles, carnival games, massages, orgami, fortune-telling, henna-painting, arts and crafts, mahjong, and much more. We each paid $2 to get in, and were handed 5 meal tickets. In addition to these, Bryan 07 gave me 3 extra tickets, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. We decided to stick only to dessert, and had some honeydew jello, bean stew over rice, green tea ice cream, red bean ice cream, flan, and a lychee pastry. No almond tofu fruit salad this year =( Here, my friend Ricarose 06 (Course 6: Electrical Engineering Computer Science) volunteers at the FSA (Filipino Students Association) booth. heres my friend Maya 06 (Course 7: Biology), a member of MIT Hapa, a group for students of mixed background. How do roles define a man or woman? A famous writer once stated, When women are seen with pen in hand, they are met immediately with shrieks commanding a return to that life of pain which their writing had interrupted, a life devoted to the womens work, of needle and distaffâ⬠(Archangela Tarabotti), thoroughly acknowledges the various struggles experienced by a typical woman in the 19th century. Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s play, A Dolls House illustrates the 19th century as a time period when equality among genders was not accepted. The roles of men and women in 19th century consist dominantly of the male, which is exhibited through the household, society, and the workforce. Patently, Throughout society male dominance is evident. Women were often dishonoured by society, particularly men, in order to establish a belief based on the fact that a womanââ¬â¢s purpose is solely to raise their children. Harsh criticism was a result, if societys expectations were not met. Society beliefs at that time were very restricted towards women. For example, it was strictly stated that women should not be educated and were not permitted to study. However, occasionally few females were able to study; however, they were only able to study on the condition that her studies would interfere with the housework (Helena Wojtczak). The male based society influences Torvald as it shapes him into a controlling husband. Plato s Allegory Of The Cave Essay - 1370 Words
Since ancient times, people have looked up to the sun as an important part to their lives. For example, the Aztecs built, Teotihuacan, to be able to locate the exact point where the sun will reach its highest point. In the Egyptian civilization, Egyptians worshiped the sun as if it was a god. They named the god Horus, who they offered many sacrifices including human flesh to satisfy the god (Ahmed 2010). All of these civilizations were interactive with their environment, but imagine if one knew only of the reality they believed inside of a cave not experiencing events within the real world. In Platoââ¬â¢s, Allegory of the Cave, he describes the scenario of prisoners kept isolated in a cave left to come up with a reality that they comprehended with the images that they saw in front of them. This applies especially to politics, because people are left to decipher the context of the speeches many of the government leaders give, but seldom explain their motives. The policies propo sed by presidential candidates obscure the reality of their motives within their campaigns by appealing to the majority sââ¬â¢ opinion on specific issues that the government needs to address. The concept of reality and illusion frequently spoken of by political candidates stems from the ââ¬Å"Allegory of the Caveâ⬠by greek philosopher Plato. A lasting moving ridge. normally called a Perm. involves the usage of chemicals to interrupt and reform the bonds of the hair. The hair is washed and wrapped on a Perm rod and beckoning lotion is applied with a base. This solution creates a chemical reaction that softens the interior construction of the hair by interrupting some of the cross links within and between the protein ironss of the hair. The hair crestless waves. stretches and softens. so molds around the form of the Perm rod. [ 1 ] In add-on. the term is frequently and falsely used for the procedure of de-curling hair ( a procedure foremost developed by Renaud Whittington ) a ââ¬Å"permâ⬠purely refers to curving hair. When hair is for good straightened the procedure is refereed to as chemically unbending. Modern PermsIn 1938. Arnold F. Willatt invented the cold moving ridge. the precursor to the modern Perm. It used no machines and no heat. The hair was wrapped on rods and a decrease lotion incorporating ammonium thioglycolate was applied. This chemical breaks open the disulfide linkages between the polypeptide bonds in the ceratin ( the protein construction ) in the hair. The disulfide bonds give hair its snap. and can be reformed with chemicals. Next. an oxidization lotion was applied. ( hydrogen peroxide ) . to shut the disulfide bridges once more and the hair was reformed to the form of the rod. The full procedure took 6ââ¬â8 hours at room temperature. In the seventiess. acid Perms were invented. These use glyceryl monothioglycolate alternatively and incorporate no ammonium hydroxide. They are sometimes called buffered moving ridges. This Perm is slower but gentler to the hair. Heat is normally added by puting the client under a drier. after covering the wrapped caput with a fictile cap. The reaction is endothermal and the extra heat causes the pH to lift from 6. 9 to 7. 2. [ 8 ] Technical considerationsThere are two parts to a Perm: the physical action of wrapping the hair. and the chemical stage. Both of these can impact the consequence. Important physical variables involved are what type of rod is used. how the hair is wrapped and how end documents are used. The two most common types of rods are consecutive and concave ; each giving a different coil consequence. The wrapper method is either coiling or croquinole. and assorted types and placements of terminal documents can be used with any combination of the above. By and large. smaller rods will bring forth smaller. tighter coil and increase the visual aspect of shortening the hair. The chemical solution used in the perming procedure is determined by the clientââ¬â¢s hair type and the pH of the solution. Authoritative alkaline Perms are used for stronger. coarser hair. They work at room temperature and normally contain ammonium thioglycolate in the pH scope of 9-10. Acid Perms are used on more delicate or thinner hair. They require outside heat application and normally contain glycerol monothioglycolate in the pH scope of 6. 5-8. 2. Permanent moving ridge machine invented in 1928 by Marjorie Joyner ââ¬â The first African American adult female to have a patentSafety considerationsDue to the rough nature of the chemicals. it is of import that contact with the tegument be minimized. The shapers of these hair merchandises try to sell a dream and excessively many African American adult females buy into it to the melody of one million millions of dollars each twelvemonth being spent. As their pockets get bigger. more and more consumers end up with damaged hair. This lone means more money in their pockets as they ( the companies ) advertise different redresss to assist reconstruct the harm that their merchandises have caused in the first topographic point. Not everyone has bought into this pipe dream though ; many African Americans are traveling back to their natural roots with dreadlocks and natural kinky twist hair manners. Even the ââ¬Ëafroââ¬â¢ has made a come back and it looks stupefying. You need to cognize that chemicals do non mend dry brickle hair ; they create it. If traveling heterosexual is a must for you there are natural ways to acquire this expression without using chemical hair straighteners. 2. Scalp infection Scalp infection as a consequence of Perms and relaxers non so uncommon. There are several instances where consumers have filed cases against the industries after utilizing their merchandises. In fact. some adult females are left with lasting bald musca volitanss due to scalp infection after the usage of chemical hair straighteners necessitating medical intervention. This is non the expression that you want to accomplish with the usage of chemical straighteners ; nevertheless. it may really good be the terminal consequence. 1. Respiratory ( Breathing ) /Gastrointestinal ( Stomach ) Problems As strange as it sounds respiratory jobs can happen from utilizing Perms and relaxers. Potassium hydrated oxide. besides called ââ¬Ëpotassium lyeââ¬â¢ is a really strong chemical and inhaling the chemical may do coughing. sneezing. and take a breathing jobs. If exposed to for long periods it is strong plenty to do harm to your lungs. Consuming potassium hydrated oxide can be every bit detrimental ensuing in Burnss to the oral cavity and/or pharynx. purging. terrible tummy hurting. diarrhoea. purging. and even decease. The effects of utilizing Perms and relaxers sound unsafe and it is ; non merely to your hair but to your overall wellness. Imagine something you apply to your hair holding so many side effects ââ¬â is holding consecutive hair truly worth the hazard? While the images of satiny glistening consecutive hair are luring. the wellness hazards are overpowering and non advertised about every bit much as they should be. Hair breakage. traveling bald. stunted hair growing. scalp infection. thinning hair. respiratory and GI jobs ââ¬â seems like a large monetary value to pay for holding consecutive hair. See natural options to hair unbending or even traveling natural with plaits. turns. or locks. Look good and experience good in terior and out without the hazard of lasting hair harm from the usage of Perms and relaxers. Youââ¬â¢ll find two types of Perms ; the Alkaline moving ridge or the Acid moving ridge. These are measured by the strength of chemicals used. and each one will impact the hair otherwise. The Alkaline Wave is a great pick for thin or all right hair since it uses a extremely powerful chemical expression to keep the coil. The Acid Wave is a milder signifier of a moving ridge. and is less likely to damage hair Hair follicles shape the shafts of extruded ceratin protein. To alter that form. disulfide bonds between proteins can be altered by lasting moving ridge chemicals. The skunky odor of many old interventions used to ââ¬Å"permanentlyâ⬠alter the form of consecutive hair into coil. was due to chemicals that broke the bonds between the S atoms that span neighbouring proteins in a hair shaft and maintain the proteins from skiding past each other. Hydrogen bonds connect the assorted parts of each protein and besides contribute to the overall stableness of the hair. Since H bonds are weak. low energy bonds. merely heating can allow some distortion of hair construction. Moisture can besides loosen up hair proteins by insinuating H2O molecules in topographic point of more direct interactions between proteins. Protein Structure and Function Proteins are synthesized on ribosomes in cells as long ironss of 1000s of aminic acids. There are 20 different amino acids. e. g. glutamate ( a. k. a. MSG ) . leucine ( supplemented to retain musculus protein during weight loss ) or cysteine ( disulfide Bridgess span two cysteines on the same or different proteins ) that provide different chemical maps along the ironss. Hydrogen bonds release merely approximately every bit much energy as encountered in the kinetic energy of single H2O molecules as they collide with each other. So. single H bonds would be continually broken and reformed. The spirals and sheets of a protein are comparatively stiff. so several H bonds must be broken at the same time for a protein to alter its overall form. At higher temperatures. as provided with a curving Fe or hair drier. adequate energy is imparted to the hair proteins to loosen up the proteins by interrupting multiple bonds at the same clip and allowing the hair protein. ceratin. to stretch and steal past other ceratin proteins. Cooling the protein in the new form will allow new weak bonds and coils to organize. Subsequently washing the hair will allow H2O molecules compete for the new bonds and permit a return to the original form. Permanent Waves Alter Disulfide Bridges Cysteine amino acids terminate in an -SH group that can organize a disulfide bond ( -SS- ) with a similar group on a cysteine in the same protein or in an next protein. These disulfide bonds lend strength and a certain sum of rigidness to keratin proteins and to hair. The disulfide bonds besides limit changing the overall form of heterosexual or curly hair. If these bonds are broken with particular sulfhydryl reagents. nevertheless. so more significant and permanent alterations can be made. Most of the lasting moving ridge solutions contain sulfur molecules themselves. and that is why they have skunky odors. The hair proteins are stretched and contorted in new forms after the disulfide bonds that hold them together in the shafts of hair have been broken ( reduced ) . While in the new form. the wave solutions are washed off and new disulfide Bridgess are permitted to organize between new neighbouring cysteines. This procedure is slow. and that is why rinsing the hair is avoided for a twenty-four hours or two. Hair Styling Reveals Molecular Biology of Proteins Hair is made of typical proteins and the alteration of these protein constructions by heat and wet reveals the implicit in constructions of the proteins. Similar protein form or conformation alterations underlie many of the complex maps of cells.
